Lesson 1.1: Opening Microsoft Office Word 2003

   

 

 

We’ve already talked about different kinds of menu items and how to use them. Now, let’s take a look at the actual contents of each menu.

 

 

File menu

Contains all the commands for working with files. You can open, close, save, and print files from here. You can also send documents to other people using fax, e-mail, or online workspaces.

 

Edit menu

Contains all the commands you need for editing your document. You can cut, copy, and paste text, or undo/redo actions. You can also find and replace text using this menu.

 

View menu

This menu has different layouts and zoom levels, as well as some viewing tools. You can also turn toolbars, rulers, and task panes on and off with this menu.

 

Insert menu

Lets you add graphics, symbols, fields (like date and time), pre-defined text entries, objects, and lots of other neat goodies to add to your document!

 

Format menu

Allows you to change the way your document looks. Add fonts, bullets, numbers, or styles to your text. Or, add graphics like backgrounds, borders, shading, and themes. You can also modify how paragraphs look, or add special formatting like columns.

 

Tools menu

Has tools to add that extra pizzazz to your documents. Check for spelling or grammar errors, summarize your document, research a topic, use the thesaurus, or translate text. You can also use advanced features like collaboration tools, macros, and mail merge.

Table menu

Has all the tools you need to add a table to your document. You can insert or draw a table, add or remove rows, and format and sort data.

 

Windows menu

Allows you to switch between multiple windows, or arrange the windows you have open.

 

Help menu

Is the place to go when you have questions! Use tools like Office Online, the Office Assistant, and Word help to enhance your experience.
