SECTION 1
Lesson 1.3: Creating and Selecting Text

Did you know that you can use the keyboard to select text too? This can be a much quicker way of selecting items once you get used to Microsoft Word. For most of these methods, we’ll be using the special keys in the middle of your keyboard (Home, End, and the Arrow keys).

Here’s a list of how to select different items:

To select a letter to the left of your cursor

Shift + Left Arrow

Select the letter to the right of your cursor

Shift + Right Arrow

To select text from your cursor to the beginning of a word

Ctrl + Shift + Right Arrow

To select text from your cursor to the end of a word

Ctrl + Shift + Left Arrow

To select from your cursor to one line above

Shift + Up Arrow

To select text from the position of your cursor to one line below

Shift + Down Arrow

To select text from your cursor to one page above

Shift + Page Up

To select text from your cursor to one page below

Shift + Page Down

To select text from your cursor to the beginning of the line

Shift + Home

To select text from your cursor to the end of the line

Shift + End

To select text from your cursor to the beginning of the paragraph

Ctrl + Shift + Up Arrow

To select text from your cursor to the end of the paragraph

Ctrl + Shift + Down Arrow

To select an entire document

Ctrl + A

Remember that you can use combinations of these keys. For example, you could hold Control and Shift and press the Up Arrow twice to select the two paragraphs above your cursor. The easiest way to get good at selecting is to practice and use different methods, to find out what works for you. We’re going to practice selecting at the end of this lesson, so don’t worry if all the methods don’t make sense right now.
