Lesson 1.2: Toolbars

   

 

 

One of the toolbars you will probably use the most is the standard toolbar. It’s turned on by default, and it will appear at the top of your screen (under the menu bar). It looks like this:

 

 

Let’s take a look at what each of these buttons do. Remember, we’re not going to talk about all of these concepts right now; this is just to help you understand where to find commonly used commands.

 

Also remember that if there is a down arrow (▼) next to an option you can click that arrow to see more choices. Below are some of the common buttons available on the standard toolbar.

 

Creates a blank document in a new window.

Opens a dialog to choose a document to open.

Saves your document. (If you haven’t already specified a name and location for your document, you will be prompted for this information.)

Set permissions on your document using Information Rights Management.

Adds a section to your document so you can e-mail the current file.

Prints your document.

Opens print preview.

Checks for spelling and grammar errors in your document.

Opens the research task pane.

Cuts the selected text.

Copies the selected text.

Pastes text from the clipboard.

Opens the Format Painter.

Un-does your last action.

Re-does your last action.

Inserts a hyperlink.

Opens the Tables and Borders toolbar. (If this button is coloured or depressed, it means the toolbar is already on. You can click the button again to close the toolbar.)

Inserts an Excel worksheet into your document.

Inserts a table into your document.

Changes formatting of your text to columns.

Opens the drawing toolbar. (If this button is coloured or depressed, it means the toolbar is already on. You can click the button again to close the toolbar.)

Opens the document map view.

Shows all markings in the document.

Changes the zoom level in your document.

Opens the help task pane.

Changes your view to reading layout.

 

Remember, if you’re not sure what a particular toolbar button does, just put your mouse over it to see a screen tip.
